How to Handle a Bounced Check

At some point every person who has a checking account will bounce a check.  It is a common error and something that needs to be handled promptly.  A bounced check left unhandled can lead to serious, possibly legal, problems.

At the moment you notice you have bounced a check you should contact your financial institution and whoever you wrote the check to.  You want to avoid having it sent through again to the bank where it will bounce again and you will have to pay more fees.

If possible you need to deposit money into your checking account to handle the bounced check and the fees.  Of course this is not always possible.

If you can not deposit money you need to find a way to handle the situation.  You need to speak with your lender.  If this was your first time bouncing a check they may be willing to wave fees which will help you out.

You should also try to pay, in cash, for the check.  You still owe that debt and they legally can keep sending it through the bank until it clears, which means many fees for you.

You should never let a bounced check go.  You have to take care of it.  Be responsible and make sure that you always try to avoid bouncing a check in the first place.
